Preventive healthcare is an integral part of general practice and finds its way into most of our consultation. It includes everything from infant immunisations to assessing your heart risk to reducing the risk of falls in older people. Preventive healthcare includes the prevention of illness, the early detection of specific disease, and the promotion and maintenance of health. Preventive care is based on a partnership between the Ellen Health team and you …. our patient … and is designed to help you reach your goals of maintaining or improving your health. Preventive activities are different for each gender and stage of life. For new patients to Ellen Health, your first experience of preventive health will be with our practice nurses who will collect information about your general health, family medical history, height and weight and blood pressure.
Prevention is the key to your future health. It is estimated that 80% of premature heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancer could be prevented through interventions that lead to healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoidance of tobacco products.
Determining whether a preventive activity is beneficial, harmful or otherwise requires ongoing attention to evidence and research.
This is particularly the case in the area of cancer screening where there is considerable debate about balancing harms and benefits, and avoiding over-diagnosis and over-treatment.
